Cindy's Sewing and Crafts Projects

Christmas 2004

A stuffed cat I made for one of my nephews, Nicolai, who at the time was a newborn. The material is sweatshirt fleece, and was actually left over from matching Halloween costumes I'd made for Robert and me a couple years earlier. I was Snoopy (white fleece), Robert was Woodstock (yellow). The face is drawn on with a black fabric marker - buttons would be a choking hazard for such a tiny baby, and I'm not much at embroidery.

The pattern is from Burda.

Another stuffed animal from the same Burda pattern. This was for my then-two-year-old nephew Connor. Again, leftover sweatshirt fleece from Halloween costumes, and a face drawn on with a marker for safety. One of the ears was sewn inside out so the fuzzy side of the fleece was outside.

A fleece jacket made for my then-five-year-old nephew Cameron. Cool fabric, isn't it? This time the fabric was bought just to make this garment. This is made from the KwikSew Sewing for Children book. The hood has a bit of elastic hidden in the casing near the top, which helps it stay in place without strings, which have been branded a potential strangulation hazard....

Apologies for the cluttered background; I took these photos when I was about to wrap things up and start packing for a trip to the States. In one photo you can see a picture of a sailing ship on the table behind; that was my father's Christmas present. It's made of flakes of amber in a variety of colors. I bought it at a white elephant auction, of all places.

Overalls and a long-sleeved T-shirt for Connor. The T-shirt is made of what was left over after I made a T-shirt for Kenneth years ago; the original shirt now fits Robert. (I swear, I never buy more than what the pattern directions call for, but I end up with tremendous amounts of leftovers.) The denim was bought for this garment. Both pieces are made from the KwikSew Sewing for Toddlers book.

The slippers on the left weren't actually a Christmas present, but were made for young Robert at about that time. The blue slippers were a present for my mother. They are both made from "Eskimo" 100% wool yarn by Garnstudio, colors 8 and 12 respectively, on 8mm needles, and then washed in warm water to felt them. Eskimo is designed to be felted and it turns out beautifully. The pattern is from a Norwegian knitting magazine called Drops, published by Garnstudio.

Spring 2005

This baby blanket was for a friend's baby. I knitted it in "Paris" 100% cotton yarn from Garnstudio, color 31, on 6mm needles. I simplified this from a pattern I found on the 'net. The first and last ten rows are knitted, as are the first and last seven stitches in each row. The center is knitted in garter stitch. This forms a frame around the blanket, which not only makes the blanket look better but keeps the edges from rolling. If I had to do it again, and I probably will for other babies, I would make it smaller. I badly underestimated the time this took to knit. Took it with me to the US to finish, so it was knitted in Norway, somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean, in Pennsylvania, in Maryland, in Virginia, in North Carolina, in South Carolina, in Georgia, and in Florida... but I got it finished! Only two weeks after the baby was born!

And then I took a long break where nothing got finished, and...

Christmas 2005

Front and rear views of corduroy overalls for my one-year-old nephew, Nicolai. Unfortunately I have a sneaking suspicion they're going to be much too big on him. The red fabric with the pattern of old-fashioned toys is left over from a vest I made for Kenneth for Christmas when he was - eek - three years old. The black corduroy is a leftover from matching Christmas outfits I made for the boys when Kenneth was 8 and Robert 2.

The pattern is from the KwikSew Sewing for Toddlers book. Don't you think black cord pants are just what every crawling baby needs? Especially when the family has a cat in the house?

A sweatshirt jacket for four-year-old Joakim. This sweatshirt fabric sure gets around, doesn't it? The applique is a purchased iron-on. Pattern from KwikSew Sewing for Toddlers again.

And a sweatshirt jacket for Joakim's little brother Daniel, age 1 1/2. Same pattern, and also a purchased iron-on applique.
